Bromley Council are looking for a Chief Accountant to join their Financial Accounting & Systems team. Reporting to the Head of Corporate Finance & Accounting, you will play a key role in overseeing the Council’s accounts, treasury management, capital programme, VAT, Collection Fund, and budget coordination.
You will ensure the Council and Pension Fund accounts are accurate, compliant, and delivered to the highest standards, while acting as the main contact for external auditors. This is a strategic leadership role, providing high-level financial advice, driving continuous improvement, and supporting the development of financial services across the organisation.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead production and assurance of Council and Pension Fund accounts
- Manage treasury (c. £300m investments / £8.6m income budget) and capital programme
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, monitoring, and financial regulations
- Coordinate external audit and statutory financial returns
- Provide expert advice on technical accounting and legislation
- Manage and develop a team of 6 FTEs
About you:
- CCAB-qualified accountant (or equivalent) with significant senior-level experience
- Strong leadership and staff management skills
- Expert knowledge of financial accounting, audit, and local government finance
- Excellent communicator, able to influence senior stakeholders and external partners
- Proven ability to drive improvements and manage complex projects under pressure
