Head of Finance

We are seeking an experienced Interim Head of Finance to support the S151 and the senior team to provide strategic financial leadership and operational stability as they progress through Local Government Reorganisation (LGR).  

This is a 6 - 12 month assignment and will require 2 days a week onsite.

This is a critical role at a pivotal moment for the council, requiring someone who can quickly build credibility, work closely with experienced managers and ensure our financial position remains robust throughout transition.

You will oversee the council’s financial operations, support the development of new structures and processes, and work closely with senior officers. councils. Your leadership will help ensure continuity, compliance, and clear financial insight as services and responsibilities evolve.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide strategic financial leadership during LGR, ensuring continuity of financial controls, reporting, and governance.
  • Lead the budget cycle, medium‑term financial planning, and financial modelling required for transition.
  • Support the development of new financial frameworks, processes, and systems aligned to emerging structures.
  • Advise senior leaders and elected members on financial risks, opportunities, and implications of LGR.
  • Oversee statutory accounts, treasury management, and audit activity.
  • Ensure compliance with CIPFA standards and all relevant legislation.

About you

You’ll be someone who thrives in complex, fast‑moving environments and brings both technical excellence and calm, confident leadership. We’re looking for:

  • Full CCAB qualification (CIPFA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA).
  • Extensive experience in local government finance, ideally including reorganisation, transformation, or major change programmes.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial issues for non‑financial audiences.
